PROFINET: GSDML, device name and channel addresses

This is how you integrate the PN5R into your controller: install the GSDML file matching the position of DIP switch 0, drag the module into the hardware configuration, assign the device name. Below you find all channels of your model with their address in TIA Portal.

S7-1200 (CPU 1214C) with TIA Portal V17
  • All modules ship with the device name “PNIO”. Assign each module its own name.
  • The MAC address is printed on the device. When assigning, compare it with the list of accessible devices.

Assign device name (TIA Portal)

  1. Search for the module with Online access → Update accessible devices; under Online & diagnostics → Functions you can assign the IP address and name directly.
  2. Or, in the network view, right-click the connection between PLC and module and select Assign device name.
  3. Click Update list, select the module by its MAC address and click Assign name; the status must show “OK”.
  4. Compile, download to the PLC and switch the module off and on once.

Which GSDML file?

The ZIP under Downloads contains a standard version and an alarm version for each model. The alarm version also delivers an alarm code in the first two input bytes, so all inputs shift 2 bytes higher. DIP switch 0 on the module determines which one you need: 0 = standard, 1 = alarm. Install via Options → Manage general station description files (GSD); in the hardware catalog under Other field devices → PROFINET IO → I/O → SOLIDOT → SOLIDOT PN5 SERIES. With “Online → Hardware detection → PROFINET devices from network”, TIA Portal also finds the module by itself.

Source: PN5R Series Integrated I/O User Manual V1.01 (07/2026), chap. 3, 4.2, 4.3, 7; GSDML V2.3 (Solidot, 24.02.2026).

First steps with the Solidot PN5R

The PN5R brings 32 digital channels onto PROFINET: three spring-cage terminals per channel for signal, 24 V and 0 V, two RJ45 ports with a built-in switch, diagnostics and alarms. This guide applies to the PN5R-3200, -1616B, -1616B+ and -0032B. It takes you from mounting to the first signal in TIA Portal: power supply, wiring, DIP switches, GSDML, device name, downloading and testing.

Before connecting
  • Mount and remove only with the power off (manual chap. 5.1).

  • Protection class IP20: the module belongs in a control cabinet.

  • Set up the system supply (terminal 0/1) and the field supply (terminal 3/4) separately and do not mix them.

  • Ground PE at terminal 7 securely. Use copper wires only, rated for 80 °C (manual chap. 6).

  1. 1Mounting: DIN rail or wallRequired

The module measures 182 × 57 × 34 mm including mounting ears (housing 160 mm wide) and sits vertically – leave at least 50 mm of space above and below the module.

On the DIN rail: pull the clip at the bottom of the back outwards, hook the module on at the top, press it onto the rail and push the clip up until it clicks.

On the wall: push the mounting ears on the left and right outwards until they click into place, and screw the module on through the holes (⌀ 4.3 mm, spacing 169 mm). You find the drilling template in the “Dimensions & mounting” tab.

    Source: Manual chap. 3.1, 5

  2. 2Connect system and field supplyRequired

The 8-pole connector at the top left carries both supplies: system supply 24 V DC to terminal 0 (24V) and 1 (0V), field supply to terminal 3 (IO+) and 4 (IO−). Terminals 2 and 5 are the second terminal of IO+ and IO− respectively, terminal 7 is PE.

The field supply powers all inputs and outputs: the 24 V and 0 V terminals of each channel are connected internally to IO+ and IO−. Permissible range is 20.4–28.8 V, max. 8 A per group.

6COM or NCInput reference on PN5R-3200 and -1616B, otherwise not used
    7PEEarth

The supply terminals only take 0.2–0.75 mm². With a high output load (up to 6 A per 16 channels), plan the cross-section and fusing accordingly – the manual gives no recommendation for this.

If the field supply is missing, the module reports the alarm “Load voltage not connected”.

Show wiring “System supply 24 V”Show wiring “Field supply 24 V”

    Source: Manual chap. 3.2–3.4, 6.1, 6.3

  3. 3Connect sensors and loadsRequired

Each channel has three spring-cage terminals one above the other: 1 signal, 2 24 V (NC on pure outputs), 3 0 V. This way a 3-wire sensor connects entirely to its own channel: BK to 1, BN to 2, BU to 3. A load goes between 1 and 3.

Strip 9–10 mm of insulation, press the button with a flat-blade screwdriver up to 3 mm wide and insert the wire. Cross-section 0.3–1.5 mm².

PN5R-3200 and -1616B: the inputs are NPN/PNP compatible, the reference is COM (supply terminal 6). For PNP sensors connect COM to 0 V, for NPN sensors to +24 V. PN5R-1616B+: inputs PNP only.

Outputs: PNP, max. 0.5 A per channel, short-circuit proof with automatic recovery. Load resistive, inductive or lamp.

  4. 4Set the DIP switchesRequired

DIP switch 0 determines which GSDML version you need: 0 = standard, 1 = alarm version with alarm code in the input data.

PN5R-1616B+ only: DIP 1 = 0 means DIP 2–5 each set four channels of the bottom row as input or output (0 = output, 1 = input). DIP 1 = 1 means the module detects from the wiring itself whether a channel is an input or an output.

After every change, switch the module off and on again.

The manual does not state the factory setting of the switches – check them before switching on for the first time.

Solidot PN5R remote I/O

Solidot PN5R – PROFINET Remote-I/O (Digitalmodul)
If you want to connect sensors and actuators to a PROFINET controller in a decentralised way – without running every single wire all the way back to the main cabinet – the Solidot PN5R series offers a compact, low-profile PROFINET remote I/O system. The modules sit where the signals originate – on the machine or in the field distributor – and transmit all inputs and outputs to the controller over a single Ethernet cable. Every channel has three dedicated terminals: signal, 24 V and 0 V. Sensors and actuators are therefore powered directly at the module, with no separate distribution terminals. Status LEDs right next to each channel show every input and output directly at the terminal point. 🏭 Typical applications Decentralised machine modules: Each assembly gets its own I/O module, connected via the PROFINET line – new modules are simply added in series. Relieve the control cabinet: Instead of hundreds of wires to the central cabinet, only two RJ45 cables run per module. Fewer cable ducts, fewer terminals, a clearer system. Sensor wiring without a distribution level: Because 24 V and 0 V are carried on every channel, a three-wire sensor goes straight onto the module – no additional potential distribution, no jumper combs. Retrofit on Siemens controllers: Extend existing S7-1200 or S7-1500 installations with decentralised I/O without enlarging the central PLC. Mixed signal direction: From a pure 32-channel input or output module to the 16/16 combination – on the 1616B+ model, 16 channels are freely configurable as inputs or outputs. So one variant still fits even when requirements change. 🌐 PROFINET: one cable for all signals The PN5R modules are standard-compliant PROFINET slaves and are imported into the project via their GSDML device description file. Each module has two RJ45 ports (100 Mbps) and is daisy-chained – no additional switch required. The minimum cycle time between controller and module is 1 ms, the input reaction time 150 µs. 🔗 Compatibility As a standard PROFINET device, the PN5R series works with controllers from various manufacturers; the manual documents configuration in TIA Portal V17. The inputs of the 3200 and 1616B types accept either NPN or PNP sensors – handy when both sensor types exist in your installed base. 🔌 Design and connection 3 terminals per channel: Signal, 24 V and 0 V are available on every channel – sensor and actuator supply is integrated in the module. That saves the entire supply distribution in the cabinet. Tool-free spring terminals: Power supply (8-pole) and I/O are connected via push-in spring terminals – insert the conductor, done, no screwdriver needed. Mounting: 35 mm DIN rail or direct wall mounting via the side fixing ears. Compact low-profile housing (182 × 58 × 34 mm), passive cooling – no fan, no maintenance. Power supply: 24 V DC, permissible 20.4 – 28.8 V DC, max. 8 A per terminal group on the field side. Green status LED per channel, right at the terminal. ⚙️ Configurable without extra software DIP switch on the device: The alarm version and – on the configurable models – the direction of the I/O channels are set directly on the module. Input filter 0 to 20 ms: Adjustable per module via PROFINET (factory setting 3 ms) – bouncing contacts can be settled without PLC code. Clear/hold on bus failure: Outputs can be configured module-wide or per channel to "clear", "set to 1" or "hold last value". Diagnostics: Short-circuit and reverse-polarity protection with automatic recovery, wire-break and alarm messages via PROFINET, firmware update supported. ⚠️ Limits stated honestly Protection rating IP20 – for control cabinets or protected enclosures, not for the unprotected field environment. Power supply exclusively 20.4 – 28.8 V DC, no AC supply. Operation from -20 °C to +60 °C (passive cooling). Standard process I/O – no functional-safety (safety) inputs/outputs. A separate safety controller is required for emergency stop and similar functions. PN5R modules are slave devices and require a PROFINET controller – they do not replace a PLC. The input filter applies per module, not per channel. 🏷️ Manufacturer and reliability Solidot (s'Dot) specialises in industrial networking and remote I/O technology. The PN5R modules are CE- and RoHS-compliant and built for industrial use; inputs and outputs are galvanically isolated (500 V AC) and the transistor outputs are short-circuit proof with automatic recovery. Tested to IEC 60068-2-6 (vibration) and IEC 60068-2-27 (shock). spstiger offers the series with German-language advice and support.

Solidot Patchkabel RJ45/RJ45 – geschirmt, grün
Assembled, shielded Ethernet cables for the fieldbus wiring of Solidot remote I/O modules — RJ45 on both ends, green jacket per industry convention. Available in seven lengths from 0.5 to 20 m and two jacket materials. 🔌 What for Connection between PLC and remote I/O module, and for daisy-chaining module to module (2 × RJ45 per module, no switch required). Protocol-neutral: PROFINET (PN4, PN5R, PN7A), EtherCAT (EC4, EC5R, EC7A), EtherNet/IP (EI4) and Modbus TCP (MT4). 🧵 PVC or PUR — which one PVC: the more economical choice for fixed installation in the cabinet and in cable ducts. PUR: tougher, more abrasion-resistant and oil-resistant — for moving installation, machine environments and anything that does not just sit in the cabinet. 📐 Technical basis CAT 5e, shielded, 100 Mbps — matching the Ethernet interface of the Solidot modules. Maximum cable length between two stations: 100 m (fieldbus specification). Lengths: 0.5 · 1 · 2 · 3 · 5 · 10 · 20 m. Custom lengths are available from the manufacturer on request — get in touch if you need one. ⚠️ Limits stated honestly RJ45 is an IP20 connector — for control cabinets and protected enclosures. In the field with splash water or dust, M12 cables (D-coded) are the right choice. CAT 5e, not CAT 6/CAT 6a. Not meant for gigabit backbones — the Solidot modules operate at 100 Mbps anyway.
