If you need to reliably capture barcodes, QR codes or RFID cards on a machine or installation – including outdoors or in harsh environments – the Newland FM3281 Grouper is a rugged fixed-mount scanner that combines three worlds in one device: 1D/2D barcode, OCR and full NFC/RFID.
🏭 Typical applications
RFID login at the machine: Operators sign in with an NFC card at the HMI instead of typing passwords. The FM3281 pairs with all Kinco HMIs and works as both a login and scanning device.
Access control & outdoor use: IP67 and an anti-glare design keep the scanner weatherproof – even in direct sunlight, at gates or outdoor terminals. Wiegand connects it to common access-control systems.
Scanning from displays: Newland's sixth-generation imager reads dense codes straight off a smartphone screen – ideal for ticket, coupon and parcel workflows.
Document capture (OCR): Reads plain-text lines from ID cards, passports and travel permits for check-in and identification use cases.
📷 Scanning & reading
2D area imager (1280 × 1088 CMOS) with omnidirectional capture – code orientation does not matter. IR and light sensors trigger scanning automatically. The built-in NFC reader supports ISO 14443 and ISO 15693 (Mifare, DESFire, NTAG, FeliCa and more) with secure authentication.
🔌 Connectivity
The device offers four interfaces: USB, RS-232, RS-485 and Wiegand. This version (NLS-FM3281-NFC-20) ships as a USB kit with a 2 m USB cable. RS-485 suits long cable runs or multiple devices on one bus, Wiegand suits access-control solutions – matching cables and adapters are available as accessories.
🔗 Works with Kinco HMIs
The FM3281 works with all Kinco HMIs without special setup – as a pure scanner and as an RFID login. This lets you integrate card-based user authentication directly into existing Kinco interfaces.
🔧 Ruggedness, power & warranty
IP67 protection (dust- and waterproof), operating temperature −20 °C to +60 °C, 5–24 V DC supply. Compact form factor (79 × 48 × 68 mm) for built-in or stand mounting. Newland offers a 5-year warranty.
🏷️ Manufacturer and reliability
Newland AIDC is an internationally established maker of auto-ID and scanning technology. The FM3281 Grouper is CE-compliant (EMC Class B, RoHS) and built for continuous industrial use. Looking for the same rugged scanner without NFC for indoor use? The Newland FM430 Barracuda is the more affordable alternative.
