For anyone who needs a compact programmable controller for machines, equipment or building services – without the effort and cost of a full-scale PLC system – the Eaton EASY-E4-UC-12RC1 offers a complete nano-PLC with integrated display, Ethernet port and onboard Modbus TCP.
The controller combines 8 digital inputs (4 of which can be switched to analog), 4 relay outputs up to 10 A AC and a real-time clock in a 4-SU housing. Programming is done on a PC with easySoft 8 in four languages (LD, FBD, ST, EDP) – or, when needed, directly on the device via the LCD display and keypad.
🏭 Typical applications
Machine and equipment retrofit: Replace legacy relay logic in control cabinets with a flexible programmable solution – including Ethernet connectivity for remote access.
Pump and fan control: Up to 4 high-speed counter inputs (10 kHz) for flow measurement or speed detection – including a real-time clock for time programs.
Building automation: Coordinate lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning centrally. Pass data to higher-level systems via Modbus TCP.
Energy management: Connect energy meters (e.g. Eaton EMD3P) and evaluate via the integrated data logging and cloud connectivity.
🖥️ Display and operation
The monochrome LCD display with 128 × 96 pixels shows 6 lines of 16 characters – sufficient for status displays, simple operating menus and direct programming on the device via the eight buttons. The real-time clock runs at ± 5 s per day (≈ ± 0.5 h per year) and can be synchronised via the network.
⚡ Inputs and outputs in detail
8 digital inputs (I1 – I8): Input voltage 12 V DC, 24 V DC or 24 V AC. I1 – I4 additionally usable as high-speed counters up to 10 kHz, frequency counters up to 5 kHz or as incremental encoder input pairs (2 × 5 kHz, 90° offset).
4 analog inputs (I5 – I8): 0 – 10 V DC, 12-bit resolution, accuracy ± 2 %. With DC supply, switchable between digital and analog operation.
4 relay outputs: 8 A DC at 24 V (UL R 300) or 10 A AC at 240 V (UL B 300). Service life 10 million mechanical operations, 25,000 operations under typical load.
🔌 Power supply – Universal Current
The UC variant accepts both DC and AC: 12 V DC (10.2 – 14.4 V), 24 V DC (20.4 – 28.8 V) or 24 V AC (20.4 – 26.4 V, 50/60 Hz). Reverse polarity protection included. Power consumption in operation: 3 W.
🌐 Communication and expansion
Onboard: Ethernet (1 × RJ45, 10/100 Mbit/s) with TCP/IP and Modbus TCP. A microSD slot enables program backups, data logging and firmware updates without a PC.
For serial bus systems, the device can be extended with the EASY-COM-RTU-M1 for Modbus RTU (master/client or slave/server). Up to 11 I/O expansion modules per base device – maximum 188 I/O points in full configuration.

The free demo version allows full engineering – only the final upload to the device requires the EASYSOFT-SWLIC license. Supported languages:

ST (Structured Text): Similar to a high-level language, for complex calculations

🏷️ Manufacturer and reliability
Eaton is one of the established industrial manufacturers in the European market – the easy family has been around since the late 1990s. The EASY-E4-UC-12RC1 is certified to CE, UL Listed (file E205091), cULus per UL 61010, CSA C22.2 No. 61010, EN 50178, EN 61010, EN 61131-2, EN 61000-6-2/-3 and DNV GL. It is additionally approved for UL Hazardous Location Class I Division 2, usable in groups A (acetylene), B (hydrogen), C (ethylene) and D (propane).
🔧 Mounting and scope of delivery
DIN-rail mounting (35 mm per IEC/EN 60715) or wall mounting with bracket ZB4-101-GF1 (available separately). Screw terminals for cross-sections 0.2 – 4 mm² solid or 0.2 – 2.5 mm² flexible with ferrule, tightening torque 0.6 Nm.
Dimensions: 72 × 90 × 58 mm (W × H × D), weight 0.25 kg, protection IP20.
Scope of delivery: EASY-E4-UC-12RC1 control relay, operating instructions. Note: easySoft 8 license and patch cable to be ordered separately. For serial bus expansions an EASY-COM-RTU-M1 is recommended.
⚠️ Important notice on safety-related applications
Eaton prohibits the use of the easyE4 for safety-relevant functions (personal or machine protection) and safety-related controls (burner, emergency stop, two-hand safety controls). Dedicated safety components are required for such functions.
