In a PROFINET network the cyclic real-time data shares the cable with everything else: camera images, web access, firmware updates. A simple switch treats all packets alike. When the load rises, the PROFINET telegrams wait too, and in the worst case the controller reports a lost connection to the device. The Solidot SW4-PN switches forward PROFINET frames with priority and filter PTCP telegrams, for Conformance Class A networks and without configuration.
🏭 Typical Applications
Star distribution in the control cabinet: connect PROFINET remote I/O, drives and operator panels to the controller in a star topology.
Mixed networks: PROFINET and standard Ethernet (cameras, service PC, web access) on the same network without the real-time data having to wait.
Protecting the network: broadcast storm protection via DIP switch so that a broadcast storm does not bring down PROFINET communication.
Extension without engineering: add ports without configuring a managed switch.
🧩 Which Variant?
GUP05D-PN: 5 × Gigabit RJ45
GUP08D-PN: 8 × Gigabit RJ45
Common: PROFINET Class A, broadcast storm protection, 9 – 56 V DC, metal housing
🌐 PROFINET Class A
The switches prioritise PROFINET frames (EtherType 0x8892) according to IEEE 802.1p and provide a PTCP filter. This meets the Conformance Class A requirements for network infrastructure and supports PROFINET RT. They are unmanaged: you do not configure them in the engineering tool, you simply plug them into the network.
🔌 Technical Specifications
Ports: 5 or 8 × RJ45, 10/100/1000 Mbit/s, auto MDI/MDI-X
Switching: store-and-forward, delay ≤ 7 µs, QoS prioritisation, MAC table 2K (5 ports) or 4K (8 ports)
DIP switch: switch 1 enables broadcast storm protection
Power supply: 9 – 56 V DC, two inputs P1/P2 for redundant supply, reverse polarity protection, 4 A overcurrent protection
Power consumption: < 5 W
Environment: operation −40 °C to +80 °C, storage −40 °C to +85 °C, 5 % – 95 % RH, non-condensing
EMC (GUP08D-PN according to manual): IEC 61000-4-2 ESD ±8 kV contact, ±15 kV air; IEC 61000-4-4 burst ±4 kV supply; IEC 61000-4-5 surge ±4 kV
Standards: IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.1p
🔗 Compatibility
As Conformance Class A infrastructure, the switches work in PROFINET networks regardless of the controller manufacturer, for example with a Siemens S7-1200 or S7-1500. Standard Ethernet devices on the same network are not affected.
⚠️ Limitations Stated Openly
Conformance Class A only: no topology diagnostics via LLDP and SNMP (Class B) and no IRT (Class C).
Unmanaged: the switch does not appear as a PROFINET device in the engineering tool and cannot be included in the controller's device diagnostics.
For the GUP05D-PN there is currently no user manual and no EPLAN macro.
Protection class IP40: for control cabinets or protected enclosures.
🏷️ Manufacturer and Reliability
Solidot (s'Dot, Nanjing Solidot Electronic Technology) specialises in industrial network and remote I/O technology, including PROFINET remote I/O such as the PN5R and XB6S series. The SW4-PN switches are CE and RoHS compliant, MTBF over 300,000 h; you will find the certificates in the Downloads tab. spstiger supports the series with German-language advice and support.
